World Cup 2011: Teams, summary, winner, most runs and wickets

ICC World Cup 2011

India won the 2011 World Cup, played in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, beating co-hosts Sri Lanka by 6 wickets. There was no dominant team in the tournament. Neither India nor Sri Lanka, for example, had topped their respective groups. New Zealand, a semi-finalist, had come fourth in their group.

Australia, who had gone through over two editions without losing a match, lost twice in the tournament, to Pakistan – the other semi-finalist – and India.

England provided the closest matches of the league stage: they beat Netherlands with only 8 balls to spare, tied with India, lost to Ireland (in the last over), beat South Africa by 6 runs, lost to Bangladesh by 2 wickets, and beat West Indies by 18 runs. Then they lost the quarter-final to Sri Lanka by 10 wickets!

Sachin Tendulkar finally fulfilled his dream of winning the World Cup – in his sixth attempt. He contributed towards the cause with 482 runs, 18 fewer than Tillakaratne Dilshan’s tally of 500. This included two hundreds against England and South Africa – the 98th and 99th of his career.
