New Zealand thrashed India by 10 wickets at Basin Reserve, Wellington, to rise past Sri Lanka and secure fifth place on the 2019-21 ICC Test Championship points table. They are now 20 points behind Pakistan and 26 behind England. A win at Seddon Park in the second Test of the 2-match series will take them past both sides.

India, on the other hand, encountered their first defeat. However, they are still 64 points clear of second-placed Australia, and the two teams are firm favourites to qualify for the final.
