Sri Lanka won’t make it to the top four – the 2019 World Cup will give priority to wins over net run rate – but they have a chance of finishing 5th in the league after their win over West Indies. On the other hand, the best West Indies can hope is to go past South Africa and finish 8th.
However, five teams are still in contention for three spots. Here is how every team stands.
Team | M | W | L | NR | Pts | NRR | Status |
Australia | 8 | 7 | 1 | 0 | 14 | +1.000 | Qualified |
India | 7 | 5 | 1 | 1 | 11 | +0.854 | |
New Zealand | 8 | 5 | 2 | 1 | 11 | +0.572
England | 8 | 5 | 3 | 0 | 10 | +1.000 | |
Pakistan | 8 | 4 | 3 | 1 | 9 | -0.792 | |
Sri Lanka | 8 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 8 | -0.934 | Eliminated |
Bangladesh | 7 | 3 | 3 | 1 | 7 | -0.133
South Africa | 8 | 2 | 5 | 1 | 5 | -0.080 | Eliminated |
West Indies | 8 | 1 | 6 | 1 | 3 | -0.335 | Eliminated |
Afghanistan | 8 | 0 | 8 | 0 | 0 | -1.418 | Eliminated |
Australia: Already qualified. However, to reach top spot (and play the fourth-ranked side), they will need to beat South Africa; if not, India have to lose at least once.
India: They need a point (a washout or a tie) from two matches to qualify. If Australia lose both matches, India will finish at the top if they win both matches.
New Zealand: Like India, they need 1 point. Unlike India, however, a second spot is the best they can hope for.
England: They need to beat New Zealand. If they do not, they will have to hope that whoever wins in the Pakistan–Bangladesh match loses their other match.
Pakistan: They need to beat Bangladesh and hope for England to lose. If England win, India will have to lose both matches and finish below Pakistan in net run rate.
Bangladesh: Beat both India and Pakistan. Ideally England should lose, but if not, Bangladesh have to finish with a superior net run rate than New Zealand.
Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies, and Afghanistan are already out of contention. Their matches will not have an impact on the top four either.
