Cricket news round-up – 6 June: India register first win, New Zealand defy Bangladesh to clinch thriller

India

India began their World Cup 2019 campaign with a win over South Africa; the latter have now lost three consecutive matches. Later in the day, Bangladesh, after a good fight, lost to New Zealand in the next match.

Victorious India begin journey

South Africa struggled to reach 227/9 after opting to bat first at Rose Bowl. Jasprit Bumrah (10-1-35-2) took out the openers in a fiery opening spell, but Faf du Plessis (38) and Rassie van der Dussen (22) pulled things back with a 54-run stand.

Yuzvendra Chahal (4/51) got both men, but Chris Morris (42) and Kagiso Rabada (31*) lifted South Africa beyond the 200-run mark.

India lost Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli early, but Rohit Sharma, despite a shaky start, ensured there was no major hiccup. Rohit batted through the innings for his 122 as KL Rahul (26) and MS Dhoni provided support. Rabada got 2/39 and Morris 1/36. India won by 6 wickets with 15 balls in hand.

A close fight between New Zealand and Bangladesh

Bangladesh put up a spirited fight in the 9th match before going down against New Zealand. Shakib Al Hasan (64) helped them stabilise the innings as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Matt Henry and Trent Boult took 4/47 and 2/44 wickets respectively to bowl out Bangladesh for 244.

Ross Taylor (82) led the chase and scored 82 runs, adding 105 with Kane Williamson. Williamson had got a life when the partnership was on 6.

Williamson’s wicket – an unnecessary catch to deep mid-wicket – triggered a collapse: from 160/2, New Zealand were reduced to 218/7 (they lost another wicket on 238) before Mitchell Santner ensured a 2-wicket win with 17 balls in hand.

Shakib (2/47), Mehidy Hasan Miraz (2/47), Mohammad Saifuddin (2/41) and Mosaddek Hossain (2/33) shared the wickets.

County updates

Glamorgan moved to the top of the second division table with their first innings victory since 2014. Starting the day with 68/0, Northamptonshire folded for 195 as Michael Hogan and Marchant de Lange took 4 and 3 wickets respectively.

Sussex had to battle hard to take last six Middlesex wickets to complete their innings victory. The last wicket fell with just 12.4 overs to go as Ollie Robinson finished with 7/98. For Middlesex, there were a couple of fighting half-centuries from James Harris (80) and John Simpson (76).

Despite losing their last five first-innings wickets cheaply in the morning, Surrey made a strong comeback by bowling out Somerset for 153 in their second innings. Matt Dunn picked 5 for 43. Chasing 267 for a win, Surrey closed the day with 99/2.

Nottinghamshire suffered a batting collapse and were out for only 97 as Jeetan Patel finished with 6 for 16. Earlier Warwickshire had declared their first innings for 391/9 with a century from Adam Hose. Following on Notts are currently 116/1; trailing by 178 runs.

Yorkshire got the advantage against Essex. Essex were already 9 down and saved the follow on based on a few boundaries from Peter Siddle. At one stage Essex were 190/3. Tom Westly’s 77 and Ravi Bopara’s 44 made them look stable but they lost 3 wickets for next 1 run and never recovered.

Durham somehow managed to take a crucial 25 run-lead over Derbyshire despite 79 from Matt Critchley. In their second innings, Durham are 160/5 as Alex Lees remain unbeaten on 63.

Lancashire and Leicestershire had an intriguing day with Lancashire on the ascendency despite some fight from Dieter Klein. Klein scored 87 and a pair of 37 was scored by debutant Harry Swindells and Callum Parkinson. But an inspired spell from Richard Gleeson saw them missing the follow on mark by 12 runs. Leicestershire are now on 5 for the loss of night-watchman Chris Wright.
