WBBL 2019 standout player, biggest dud, best quote – Gibson, Kapp, Melbourne Stars, Dr Redmayne feature in Week 2 wrap

Maisy Gibson Hobart Hurricanes WBBL

Standout player – Maisy Gibson

Gibson, not a household name till now, has impressed with her leg-breaks here. She has kept international stars at bay, picked up at least a wicket in every match, has the joint-most wickets in the tournament, and has gone for 5.31 an over. Not bad for an uncapped cricketer!

Biggest dud – the fixture

Barring the opening match, only one out of 15 matches in the tournament has been played on a weekday. While crammed weekend schedules are likely to draw bigger crowds, frequent five-day gaps do take the sheen off the tournament. Given the increase in popularity of women’s cricket, perhaps it is time to spread it across the week.

Standout moment – Marizanne Kapp’s hat-trick

Playing for Sydney Sixers against Melbourne Stars at the Hurstville Oval, Kapp did the hat-trick without assistance from a fielder: she bowled Madeline Penna and Nicola Hancock and trapped Holly Ferling leg-before with the last three balls of the 19th over of the innings.

Room for improvement – the Melbourne Stars middle-order

The Stars had thrown away starts twice against Hobart Hurricanes last week. It was no different this time. Against Sydney Sixers they crawled to 107/9 (96/9 at one point) after being 77/1; and after reaching 114/1 in 15.3 overs against Sydney Thunder, they could manage only 141/5. They lost both matches, as they had the week before. Something is got to give somewhere.

Best quote – Georgia Redmayne

“I decided I’d have to do my internship part-time.”
– Dr Redmayne, who graduated as a doctor this year, had to opt for a part-time option. After all, she toured England with Australia A this season, and is now playing for Perth Scorchers.
