Top 5 moves of the 2023 January Transfer Window

There were plenty of high-profile moves in the January 2023 transfer window as English clubs broke the bank this winter in pursuit of upgrading their squads. The Premier League led the way in terms of transfer spending in January, and here are our top five moves of the 2023 winter window.

5. Cody Gakpo – PSV Eindhoven to Liverpool

Liverpool acted swiftly to start the winter window with the purchase of Dutch star Cody Gakpo for £37 million. The 23-year-old has enjoyed a breakout season for PSV Eindhoven in 2022/23, contributing 9 goals and 12 assists in the first half of the Eredivisie campaign and also scoring 3 goals for the Netherlands at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Gakpo adds reinforcements to Liverpool’s frontline in the absence of the injured Luis Diaz on the left wing and can also be a long-term option at centre-forward for the Reds.

4. Leandro Trossard – Brighton to Arsenal

Having missed out on Mykhailo Mudryk, Arsenal turned their attention to Brighton winger Leandro Trossard to add firepower to their squad, signing the Belgian attacker for £27 million. Trossard impressed for the North London side on his full debut against Manchester City away and could be a useful option off the bench for Mikel Arteta’s side as they chase the Premier League title.

3. Pedro Porro – Sporting Lisbon to Tottenham

Tottenham completed one of the most important deals of the January transfer window, with the purchase of Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon. Antonio Conte’s side have acquired the Spanish wing-back on a six-month loan deal with a £ 40 million obligation to buy in the summer, and the 23-year-old addresses a clear area of concern for the North London side. Porro is a massive upgrade over Matt Doherty, Emerson Royal, and Djed Spence, and should help Spurs push for a top four place this season.

2. Mykhailo Mudryk – Shakhtar Donetsk to Chelsea

Chelsea flexed their financial might this winter with their record-breaking transfer window, and one of their major coups in January was the signature of Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk. The Blues beat Arsenal in pursuit of the 22-year-old for a fee worth £88.5 million. Mudryk burst onto the scenes in the Champions League for Shakhtar Donetsk this season and could take the Premier League by storm with his pace and mazy dribbling.

1. Enzo Fernandez – Benfica to Chelsea

Chelsea blew the British record transfer fee out of the water on the final day of the transfer window with their purchase of Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez for £106 million. The 22-year-old shone for Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, winning the young player of the year award and playing an integral role in their road to the title. Fernandez addresses an area of need for Chelsea in central midfield and is expected to be a cornerstone player for the club in the middle of the park in the years to come.
