Lucknow Super Giants IPL 2023 Preview

Lucknow Super Giants IPL 2023 Preview

The Lucknow Super Giants enjoyed a promising maiden campaign in the Indian Premier League, finishing fourth in 2022, and will look to build on that success in season 16. The KL Rahul-led side had the majority of their bases covered last year but added to their squad in the auction with the purchases of Nicholas Pooran, Jaydev Unadkat, and Daniel Sams and will be hoping to go all the way in 2023.

Player to watch out for: Nicholas Pooran

Lucknow’s top-heavy batting order was one of their few weaknesses in the IPL last season, but the Super Giants found a potential solution to those woes at the auction in the form of Nicholas Pooran. The West Indian is one of the best middle-order batters in world cricket and has an incredible record in the IPL, averaging 26 at a phenomenal strike rate of 151. Pooran balances the batting order by offering a left-handed option through the middle, and the West Indian also gives the team an additional wicket-keeping alternative alongside Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul.

Strengths

The Lucknow Super Giants have one of the strongest opening combinations in the Indian Premier League in Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul, two titans of the shortest format that have a wealth of experience in the IPL. Although Rahul has received criticism for his low strike rate as an opener, the LSG captain has scored the most runs in the IPL since 2018 and is well complemented by the aggressive South African left-hander.

In addition to the opening pair, Lucknow have a dynamic middle order filled with world-class talent. Nicholas Pooran and Deepak Hooda are two of the premier spin-hitters in the competition that can dominate the middle overs, while Marcus Stoinis has earned a reputation as one of the finest finishers in the game.

Weaknesses

Mohsin Khan broke onto the scene in IPL 2022 and starred for the Lucknow Super Giants, picking up 14 wickets at an economy of under six. However, the left-armer hasn’t played professional cricket since the previous season in 2022 and is likely to miss most of the campaign due to a shoulder injury, leaving Lucknow short in their pace bowling department.

In addition to Mohsin’s absence, Avesh Khan’s downturn in form in the shortest format could be a worry for LSG, with the pacer failing to impress for India and cast out from the side after a disappointing Asia Cup display.

Probable Playing XI
