Liverpool – Premier League 2023-24 Season Preview

After enduring a disappointing 2022/23 campaign that saw them miss out on Champions League football for the first time in six years, Liverpool will be looking to bounce back with a bang this season. The Reds have undergone a major overhaul this summer by addressing their woes in midfield and will be hoping they can put the pieces back together this season to place themselves back in contention for the Premier League title.

Summer Dealings

It’s been a busy summer on Merseyside as Liverpool bid goodbye to Roberto Firmino, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to clear the space in midfield for new additions.

The Reds began their mini-rebuild with the acquisitions of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton for £55 million and highly-rated Hungarian Dominik Szoboslai from RB Leipzig for £60 million. Completing their midfield revamp, Liverpool have reportedly agreed a record deal of £110 million with Brighton for Moises Caicedo, with the Ecuadorian coming in to replace Fabinho and Jordan Henderson’s spot in front of the defence.

Player to watch out for: Darwin Nunez

It was a mixed opening campaign for Darwin Nunez in the Premier League last season, with the Uruguayan scoring just nine goals following his big-money move from Benfica in 2022. Nunez took time to adjust to the demands of the Premier League and the heightened pressure placed on strikers but could be one of the biggest beneficiaries of a more settled Liverpool side this season, using his explosive physical attributes to be the Reds’ x-factor in the final third.

Probable XI

Jurgen Klopp switched up Liverpool’s dynamics at the tail-end of last season – a move which helped them win seven of their final nine league games and end the campaign on a high. The Reds will stick with the same system to start the new campaign, with Alisson in goal in front of a back four of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk, and Andy Robertson.

In midfield, summer signings Dominik Szoboslai and Alexis Mac Allister are likely to start as the two outside midfielders in the 4-3-3. Curtis Jones deputised as a number six in pre-season and is likely to start the new campaign as the holding midfielder until Liverpool Moises Caicedo’s impending move from Brighton is confirmed.

Up front, Mohamed Salah is guaranteed to start on the right wing, but there is plenty of competition for the other two attacking positions. Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Luis Diaz all shared the minutes in pre-season for the remaining two forward spots, and Gakpo and Jota could be the favourites to start Liverpool’s opener against Chelsea due to their ability to rotate and interchange positions seamlessly.
