Sunrisers Hyderabad‘s win over Kings XI Punjab helped them consolidate their position in the top four in the IPL 2019 points table. However, Hyderabad are still not safe; in fact, while Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings have both qualified, none of the teams has actually been eliminated.
Let us find out what each team needs to do in order to qualify for the Playoffs.
Team | M | W | L | NR | Pts | NRR | Status |
Delhi Capitals | 12 | 8 | 4 | 0 | 16 | +0.233 | Qualified |
Chennai Super Kings | 12 | 8 | 4 | 0 | 16 | -0.113 | Qualified |
Mumbai Indians | 12 | 7 | 5 | 0 | 14 | +0.347
Sunrisers Hyderabad | 12 | 6 | 6 | 0 | 12 | +0.709
Kolkata Knight Riders | 12 | 5 | 7 | 0 | 10 | +0.100
Kings XI Punjab | 12 | 5 | 7 | 0 | 10 | -0.296
Rajasthan Royals | 12 | 5 | 7 | 0 | 10 | -0.321
Royal Challengers Bangalore | 12 | 4 | 8 | 0 | 8 | -0.694 |
Delhi Capitals: While Delhi have already qualified for the Playoffs, they will want to play Qualifier 1. A win against Chennai will ensure that. And even if they lose to Chennai but beat Rajasthan Royals, they may still go through based on their net run rate, which is superior to Chennai’s.
Chennai Super Kings: They need two wins (if not, then at least a win against Delhi) to ensure a top two spot. If they don’t, they may end up playing the Eliminator.
Mumbai Indians: Mumbai may even play Qualifier 1, if they beat both Hyderabad and Kolkata. One win will guarantee them a top four spot. Even if they lose both, they may go through based on their net run rate.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Wins against Mumbai and Bangalore may even push them to the top two. However, even two defeats may help them qualify thanks to their exceptional net run rate.
Kolkata Knight Riders: None of the teams in the lower half will make it to Qualifier 1. They will want to beat both Punjab and Mumbai, especially the former, to ensure they finish ahead of at least Punjab.
Kings XI Punjab: The massive defeat against Hyderabad hurt their net run rate. Now they have to beat both Chennai and Kolkata to avoid extremely convoluted calculations.
Rajasthan Royals: They have to beat both Bangalore and Delhi to make up for that ordinary net run rate.
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Defeating both Hyderabad and Rajasthan are necessary to their cause, but not sufficient. They need to win both matches by humongous margins.
