Indian Premier League 2017: Teams, summary, winner, most runs and wickets

Indian Premier League 2019, IPL 2019, Mumbai Indians, MI, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, 12, Jasprit Bumrah

Mumbai Indians became the first IPL franchise to win three titles, that too in alternate years. In the final they beat Rising Pune Supergiant (who had dropped the ‘s’ from the end of ‘Supergiants’). The top two teams in the league stage, Mumbai and Pune clashed four times in all, of which Pune won the first three, including Qualifier 1.

Mumbai beat Pune in the final by 1 run, the narrowest winning margin in an IPL final. Krunal Pandya first lifted Mumbai from 79/7 to 129/8. At 71/1 in the 12th over, it was Pune’s match to lose. But Mumbai snuck in some tight overs, and Pune were left to chase 11 off the last over, to be bowled by Johnson. They got 9 of these.

However, that did not prevent Ben Stokes of Pune (316 runs at 143, 12 wickets at 7.18 an over) from winning the MVP award of the edition. Unfortunately, like Gujarat Lions, Pune’s two-year contract came to an end this season. The Orange and Purple Caps went to David Warner and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, both of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

BCCI experimented with an opening ceremony before the first match at every venue. But while these were high-profile affairs, they showed symptoms of a diminishing value of return of the concept.
