Eden Gardens Kolkata

Eden Gardens, Kolkata, the home of Cricket Association of Bengal and the oldest international cricket venue in India, will host the second Test between India and Bangladesh. This will be the first Test under lights on Indian soil as well as the first floodlit Tests for both participating countries.

Founded in 1864, Eden Gardens has hosted the most for any ground on Indian soil (41), the most ODIs (31), and 7 T20Is. This includes the 1987 World Cup final, the 1997 Women’s World Cup final, and the Men’s and Women’s World T20 finals, on the same day in 2016.

The venue could accommodate 90,000 people till 2011. Thanks to sale of illegal tickets, the count has soared to beyond 100,000 – the highest cricket attendance outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground – on at least six recorded occasions. Following the renovation, Eden Gardens can accommodate 68,000.

The ground has witnessed several historic moments, including hat-tricks by Kapil Dev, Harbhajan Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav; the historic stand between VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid that helped India win a Test despite following on; Rohit Sharma’s world record ODI score of 264; and Pele taking field for New York Cosmos against Mohun Bagan AC.

Eden Gardens has also had its share of crowd disturbances, the most notable ones taking place in the Tests in 1966-67, 1969-70, and 1998-99, the 1996 World Cup semi-final, and an ODI in 2005-06.
