Cricket news round-up – September 20: Sri Lanka tour of Pakistan to go ahead, Akila banned for a year, Scotland win

Akila Dananjaya Sri Lanka New Zealand

Sri Lanka’s tour of Pakistan, commencing later this month, will go ahead as planned; Akila Dananjaya has been banned from bowling at international level for a year for dubious action; Scotland beat Ireland at Malahide; and yet another round of cricket in the County Championship got over.

Sri Lanka tour to go ahead

SLC have given Sri Lanka’s tour of Pakistan a go-ahead. The tour had received a probable setback following a terror threat, but the decision was eventually finalised following a conversation between the Sri Lankan Government and the Pakistan High Commissioner.

Sri Lanka will play ODIs at Karachi on September 27, 29, and October 3 and T20Is at Lahore till October 9.

Dananjaya banned for a year

ICC have banned Akila Dananjaya from bowling at international level for a year owing to his dubious action. This is a routine ban on any bowler who fails assessments twice inside two years. However, he can bowl in domestic cricket if SLC consents.

Akila’s action was reported first in December 2018, following which he had his action cleared. Upon resumption, he was reported again this August, immediately after the Galle Test against New Zealand got over.

Scotland cruise to easy win

Scotland beat Netherlands by 6 wickets in the Ireland Tri-Nation T20 Series, at Malahide. Batting first, the Netherlands openers took the score to 30 without loss before they were reduced to 75/6, then bowled out for 123. Hamza Tahir had 4-0-30-4 and Tom Sole 4-0-15-2.

George Munsey (27 in 23), Richie Berrington (27* in 19), and Ollie Hairs (25 in 14) then saw Scotland home in the 14th over. Paul van Meekeren had 4-0-32-2.

County Championship Division 1 roundup

Warwickshire were set 271 by Nottinghamshire on the last day at Trent Bridge. They won by 8 wickets, scoring at 4.86 an over, thanks to Dominic Sibley (109), Will Rhodes (65), and Michael Burgess (61*).

Forty-three-year-old Darren Stevens put up an incredible match performance (237, 2/50, 21, 5/20) to help Kent thrash Yorkshire by 411 runs at Headingley. Resuming the day on 44/6, the hosts were shot out for 117.

County Championship Division 2 roundup

Andrew Salter (3/6) and Lukas Carey (2/14) helped Glamorgan bowl out Leicestershire for 132 at Cardiff. Glamorgan won by 291 runs.

Martin Andersson (83) lifted Middlesex from 55/5 against Lancashire at Old Trafford, but could not take them past 165 in pursuit of 270. Tom Bailey took 5/41.

Thanks to Ben Hutton’s 5/59, Northamptonshire beat Durham by 169 runs at Northampton despite Ned Eckersley’s 67 not out.
