Cricket news round-up – November 4: Mushfiqur Rahim trumps India in fine win for Bangladesh

Mushfiqur Rahim India Bangladesh

Mushfiqur Rahim starred with a half-century as Bangladesh beat India for the first time in a T20I in their ninth attempt on Sunday, November 3. Elsewhere, Chinelle Henry will be out of the WODI series against India as she recovers from concussion, while there were WBBL records for Alyssa Healy and Elyyse Perry.

Mushfiqur ends years of hurt for Bangladesh

Mushfiqur Rahim starred with a 43-ball 60* to help Bangladesh finally pull off a victory against India in a T20I. Rahim’s half-century and vital late runs helped the visitors secure a seven-wicket victory with three balls to spare.

On a sluggish pitch, India posted 148/6 after being asked to bat, with Shikhar Dhawan top-scoring with a 42-ball 41, although his strike-rate didn’t help matters. There was a 13-ball 22 from Shreyas Iyer and a 26-ball 27 from Rishabh Pant as India’s innings crawled along.

Bangladesh were a lot more settled. Despite the early wicket of Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar and Mohammad Naim put on a vital 46-run stand, before Mushfiqur arrived to provide the boost to the scoring, particularly in the death off Khaleel Ahmed. The victory was Bangladesh’s first against India in nine tries.

Chinelle Henry out of India WODI series

Chinelle Henry, the West Indies Women all-rounder, will be assessed for concussion after injuring herself in the first WODI against India. She will play no further part in the IWC series.

Henry, in an attempt to save a boundary, collided head first into the advertising boards at North Sound, and was immediately withdrawn from the game, with a concussion sub coming in her place in the first such instance in women’s cricket.

A CWI press release said Henry will be unavailable for seven days, at the very least, and Hayley Matthews, having served an eight-match suspension, will take her place in the side from the third ODI.

Healy, Perry break records in WBBL

Alyssa Healy and Ellyse Perry broke records in the latest WBBL bout between Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers, with the Sixers running out 45-run winners in the end.

Healy and Perry walked out to open, and batted all 20 overs after opting to bat, with Perry scoring a 68-ball 87* and Healy, remarkably, scoring a 53-ball 106*.

It was the highest stand for any wicket in the WBBL, comfortably surpassing the previous record of 156. It came on Perry’s 29th birthday, while Healy’s ton was her third in the month, after reaching three figures in the ODIs and T20Is against Sri Lanka.

Morgan wants England fielders to do better

After England’s defeat in the second T20I against New Zealand – a fifth loss for the visitors at the Westpac Stadium – Eoin Morgan, their captain, trained focus on the team’s fielding.

England put down a fair few catches in the 21-run loss, and despite the blazing sun seemingly distracting some fielders, Morgan said that was an area the team definitely needed improvement in.

“When you drop that amount of catches it’s not a great reflection on the performance and the levels of fielding that we aspire to,” Morgan said. “There were a couple of catches that went in the sun which made it look a lot worse but as regards our standard catches, we expect more.”
