Cricket news round-up – November 27: Samson replaces Dhawan for West Indies T20Is, Western Australia win the Marsh Cup

Sanju Samson of Rajasthan Royals celebrates his century during match 8 of the Vivo Indian Premier League Season 12, 2019 between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Rajasthan Royals held at the Rajiv Gandhi Intl. Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad on the 29th March 2019

Sanju Samson has been named replacement for the injured Shikhar Dhawan for India’s upcoming T20I series against West Indies; Western Australia beat Queensland by 4 wickets to clinch the Marsh Cup; Melbourne Renegades have appointed Michael Klinger as coach; and Nelson Mandela Bay Giants have named Ryan ten Doeschate as replacement for Farhaan Behardien.

Western Australia win the Marsh Cup

Western Australia won their 14th title in the Australian Domestic List A tournament (currently the Marsh Cup). Jhye Richardson (3/35) and Nathan Coulter-Nile (3/47) first bowled out Queensland for 205 at the Allan Border Field, Brisbane. Things could have been worse for Queensland – they were 127/7 at one point – had Jimmy Peirson (79) not come to rescue.

But Michael Neser (2/34) and Mark Steketee (2/37) hit back, reducing WA to 23/3. Shaun Marsh (101*) added 97 with Marcus Stoinis (37) before Queensland struck again. However, at 151/6 Marsh found another partner, in Ashton Agar (29*). Western Australia won with 2 overs to spare.

No Dhawan for West Indies T20Is

Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the 3 T20Is against West Indies with a knee injury. Dhawan had sustained the injury while taking a run for Delhi against Maharashtra in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Dhawan has been replaced by Sanju Samson, who was part of the series against Bangladesh and was subsequently dropped without being given a chance.

Renegades rope in Klinger

Melbourne Renegades has appointed Michael Klinger, the highest run-scorer in BBL history (1,947, strike rate 118, 1 hundred, 12 fifties) as their coach for the upcoming season. Klinger will replace Andrew McDonald, who has recently be named assistant coach of the Australian national team.

Shaun Graf, General Manager of Cricket, Cricket Victoria, explained Klinger’s selection to ESPNCricinfo: “The qualities that made Maxy [Klinger] such an accomplished player are the qualities that will set him up for an excellent coaching career. He’s well-prepared, well-structured and an excellent man manager with fantastic leadership experience.”

Tendo replaces Behardien

Nelson Mandela Bay Giants, currently at the top of the Mzansi Super League points table, have roped in Port Elizabeth-born Ryan ten Doeschate of Netherlands and Essex. Ten Doeschate will replace the injured Farhaan Behardien. Behardien has batted only once in this edition, smashing a 34-ball 48 against Jozi Stars.

Bay Giants coach Eric Simmons explained ten Doeschate’s choice to ESPNCricinfo: “We needed someone who can access the boundaries and perform much like the way we’ve seen with Heino Kuhn. Ryan brings with him significant experience, calmness and he’s a leader.”
