Cricket news round-up – February 11: Waqar Hasan passes away, Pakistan win Rawalpindi Test

Pakistan

Former Pakistan batsman Waqar Hasan passed away at Karachi; Pakistan beat Bangladesh at Rawalpindi to go 1-0 up in the Test series; David Warner and Ellyse Perry won the Allan Border and Belinda Clark Medals respectively; and ICC have announced their team for the Under-19 World Cup.

Waqar Hasan passes away

Waqar Hasan, last surviving member from either side in Pakistan’s first ever Test, against India at Delhi in 1952-53, passed away in Karachi. He was 87. He scored 357 runs in the series – the most from either side – at 44.62.

From 21 Tests between that series and 1959-60, Waqar had scored 1,071 runs at 31.50. His only hundred, 189, came against New Zealand at Lahore in 1955-56. His 4,741 First-Class runs came at 35.64.

Waqar later became a national selector. Pervez Sajjad, his brother, was a left-arm spinner who played 19 Tests between 1964-65 and 1972-73.

Pakistan win in first session

Pakistan beat Bangladesh by an innings at Rawalpindi and 44 runs to go one-up in the 2-match Test series. They took 106 balls to pick up the remaining 4 wickets, for the cost of 42 runs. Bangladesh will return for the second Test in April, after the PSL.

Trailing by 212, Bangladesh began their day at 126/6 and lost Mominul Haque (41) in the first over. Liton Das hung around for 29, lofting Yasir Shah (4/58) over mid-wicket for six, but Yasir had his revenge, trapping Liton leg-before.
