Mohammad Hafeez Pakistan

Pakistan beat hosts (and favourites) England by 14 runs to register their first points in ICC World Cup 2019; India are set to host five teams in 2019-20; and Billy Root, brother of Joe, scored 229 in the County Championship on the same day as his brother’s hundred against Pakistan.

Pakistan topple England to end embarrassing streak

Coming into the match, Pakistan had lost 11 ODIs in a row and England had won 5. Here, however, they got off to a fantastic start after Eoin Morgan put them in on a flat Trent Bridge track.

Imam-ul-Haq (44 in 58 balls), Fakhar Zaman (36 in 40), Babar Azam (63 in 66), and Sarfraz Ahmed (55 in 44) all contributed, but the most crucial contribution came from Mohammad Hafeez (84 in 62). Moeen Ali took 3/50, Chris Woakes 3/71, and Mark Wood 2/53.

England were reduced to 118/4 in response before Joe Root (107 in 104) and Jos Buttler (103 in 76) added 130 in 105 balls for the fifth wicket. England needed 62 in 27 balls when Buttler followed Root to the pavilion; they eventually fell 14 short. Wahab Riaz had 3/82, Shadab Khan 2/63, and Mohammad Amir 2/67.
