Cricket news round-up – 31 August: Bumrah hat-trick leaves West Indies reeling

Jasprit Bumrah West Indies India 2019

Jasprit Bumrah became the third Indian to take a hat-trick in Test cricket: he finished the day with 6/16, leaving West Indies in tatters at 87/7; an outrageous blitz from Ishan Kishan helped India A beat South Africa; the Australians rolled over Derbyshire with some ease; and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019 went underway.

Bumrah blows West Indies away

Jasprit Bumrah carried on from where he had left at North Sound, following his 5/7 with 6/16 (and counting). This included a hat-trick – the third by an Indian in Test cricket, after Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan – where he got Darren Bravo, Roston Chase, and Shamarh Brooks. West Indies, reeling at 22/5 at one point, recovered somewhat to reach 87/7 by stumps at Sabina Park.

Earlier, Hanuma Vihari registered his maiden Test hundred (111) and Ishant Sharma his first Test fifty (57). They added 112 for the eighth wicket to take India to 416. Jason Holder (5/77) reached the 100-wicket landmark with the tenth wicket of the innings.

Kishan pulverises Protean bowlers

Ishan Kishan’s brutal 24-ball 55 changed the course of the match at Thiruvananthapuram as India A beat South Africa A by 2 wickets with an over to spare.

George Linde (52* in 25 balls) and Temba Bavuma (40 in 33) helped South Africa A put up 162/5 in a match reduced to 21 overs a side. India A needed 106 in 73 balls when Kishan walked out – and cut loose. India A scored 74 during his stay at the crease, off 35 balls. A mini-collapse followed towards the end, with India losing 3 for 4 in 8 balls, but Krunal Pandya kept his cool to see India home.

Australians thrash Derbyshire

The Australians made small task of Derbyshire in their tour match, thrashing them by an innings and 54 runs at Derby. Mitchell Starc, who had taken a triple-wicket maiden in the first innings, made an even stronger case for himself with 4/39 in the second. Mitchell Marsh took 2/5 and Peter Siddle 2/21.

From 53/3, Derbyshire were bowled out for 112 in just 19.4 overs of cricket on the third morning. Leus du Plooy (37) played the only innings of note.

ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier roundup

Ireland, Scotland, and Thailand opened their respective first matches in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019, while the match between Bangladesh Women and Papua New Guinea Women at Dundee was washed out.

A 7-over match was finally arranged at Dundee, in which Scotland crushed USA. Scotland scored 60/3 (Claudine Beckford 2-0-26-3) largely due to Kathryn Bryce (29* in 20). Bryce also had 2-0-6-2 later in the day as USA crawled to 30/5.

Thailand beat Netherlands comfortably a match reduced to 9 overs at Arbroath. Nattakan Chantam (44* in 32) and Naruemol Chaiwai (26* in 22), the Thai openers, batted through the 9 overs to put up 76. Then Chanida Sutthiruang (2-1-5-3) reduced Netherlands to 23/5, from which they never recovered. They eventually finished on 46/5.

Ireland beat Namibia by 7 wickets, also at Arbroath. Eimear Richardson (4-1-10-2) helped Ireland restrict Namibia to 83/9 before Gaby Lewis (26 in 23), Kim Garth (22* in 29), and Mary Waldron (33 in 30) saw Ireland home with 33 balls to spare.
