Cricket news round-up – 19 May: Scotland-Sri Lanka washed out, Latham uncertain for World Cup opener

Sri Lanka Scotland ODI rain

The first ODI of the 2-match series between Scotland and Sri Lanka was washed out; South Africa Women drew level with Pakistan Women; USA Women won the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Americas Region Qualifier; and Tom Latham may miss New Zealand’s World Cup opener.

No play at Edinburgh

The first ODI between Scotland and Sri Lanka at Grange Cricket Club, Raeburn Place, Edinburgh had to be called off due to incessant rain without a toss. The teams will have another shot at it, on May 21, which will also be Sri Lanka’s last ODI before the World Cup warm-up matches.

South Africa Women level series

South Africa Women beat Pakistan Women by 8 wickets to draw level in the 5-T20I series. Both sides have now won a match each.

Opting to bat at City Oval, Pietermaritzburg, Pakistan Women got to 128/5 thanks to captain Bismah Maroof’s 47-ball unbeaten 63. Sune Luus had 4-0-29-2, Marizanne Kapp 4-0-28-1, Shabnim Ismail 4-1-17-0, and Tumi Sekhukhune 3-0-12-1.

Sana Mir (4-1-20-1) and Rameen Shamim (4-0-23-0) bowled well in response, but Lizelle Lee (56 in 52) and Kapp (56* in 51) saw South Africa home with a ball to spare.

USA Women win series

USA Women took an unassailable 2-0 lead against Canada in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Americas Region Qualifier. Asked to bat at Lauderhill, USA Women scored 113/6 thanks to a 30-ball 38 from Sindhu Sriharsha. Mahewish Khan had 4-0-11-2 and Achini Perera 4-0-22-1.

Canada were then shot out for 76 by Uzma Iftikhar (4-0-19-4) and Claudine Beckford (3-2-1-2).

Latham uncertain for World Cup opener

Tom Latham may miss the first match for New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup. Latham had fractured a finger during a practice match against Australia at Brisbane. While he will travel with the team, he will not feature in the warm-up matches – and, worse, probably their first match of the tournament, against Sri Lanka on June 1.

If Latham misses the Sri Lanka match, uncapped Tom Blundell – the only other wicketkeeper in the side – will make his ODI debut.
