Cricket news round-up – 18 May: Bangladesh, England clinch series

Bangladesh beat West Indies to win the Tri-Series in Ireland, while England won the ODI series against Pakistan; Indian domestic cricket is set to adopt several changes; and the third round of the County Championship came to an end.

Bangladesh win maiden multi-nation trophy

Bangladesh beat West Indies in the final of the Ireland Tri-Series by 5 wickets to clinch their first multi-nation trophy. Shai Hope (74 in 64 balls) and Sunil Ambris (69* in 78) got West Indies off to an excellent start after West Indies were asked to bat.

Rain stopped play after West Indies were 131 for no loss in 20.1 overs. The match was reduced to 24 overs a side, and West Indies finished on 152/1 once play resumed. Bangladesh had to chase 210.

Soumya Sarkar (66 in 41) got Bangladesh off to a frantic start, and Mushfiqur Rahim (36 in 22) played a brisk cameo. But the real blow came from Mosaddek Hossain (52* in 24), who registered the fastest ODI fifty in Bangladesh history, off 20 balls.

West Indies were in it when Bangladesh needed 27 off the last 3 overs, but Mosaddek sealed it with 6, 6, 4, 6 off the next four balls off Fabian Allen.

England take unassailable lead

England won the ODI series with a win in the fourth ODI against Pakistan, at Trent Bridge. They went 3-0 up in the 5-match series. Asked to bat, Pakistan put up 340/7, thanks to Babar Azam (115 in 112), Mohammad Hafeez (59 in 55), Fakhar Zaman (57 in 50), and Shoaib Malik (41 in 26).

Tom Curran picked up 4/75. Imam-ul-Haq, who had to retire hurt after being hit on the elbow by Mark Wood, resumed batting later in the innings.

Jason Roy (114 in 89) got England off to a rollicking start. He found support from James Vince (43 in 39) and Joe Root (36 in 41). Then a collapse ensued, and England were suddenly reduced to 216/5 from 201/1. Then Ben Stokes (71* in 64) guided them home.

Indian domestic cricket may undergo overhaul

BCCI are toying with the idea of implementing DRS for all televised matches in the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy. The only objection to this at this stage at the Captains’ Conclave was the limited number of matches being telecast.

Additionally, umpires will be evaluated by match referees, and there were suggestions regarding the scrapping of the Duleep Trophy.

County Championship Division 1 roundup

Yorkshire thrashed Kent by 172 runs at Canterbury. Asked to chase 384, Kent, 34/3 overnight, were bowled out for 211 after staging a mini-recovery from 89/5. Ben Coad (6/52) led the rout.

Only 37 overs of cricket were possible at Taunton. Surrey, 18 behind Somerset on first innings, played out time to finish on 255/8. Will Jacks scored 54, while Jack Leach took 3/70.

Hampshire beat Warwickshire by 314 runs at Edgbaston. Chasing 424, the hosts were 42/2 at stumps on Day Three, but they were bowled out for another 67 runs in 32.5 overs. Fidel Edwards took 3/36 and Kyle Abbott 2/11.

County Championship Division 2 roundup

Gloucestershire avoided a shock defeat against Glamorgan at Newport. Asked to follow on 214 behind, Glamorgan had recovered brilliantly to reach 364/1 thanks to Nicholas Selman (150) and Marnus Labuschagne (137). They eventually set Gloucestershire 137/6 and had them at 137/6 when time ran out.

Lancashire needed just 16 to beat Northamptonshire at Old Trafford. They took 16 balls and did not lose a wicket.

Worcestershire, however, were made to fight to chase 81 against Durham at New Road. Chris Rushworth (5/28) single-handedly reduced them to 55/5 before they recovered to win by 5 wickets.

Chasing 305 against Middlesex at Lord’s, Worcestershire finished on 226/5 in a 61-over day. Colin Ackermann top-scored with 70.

USA Women go one-up

USA Women beat Canada Women by 10 wickets to go one-up in the 3-match series to decide the winner of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Americas Region Qualifier.

Canada batted through 20 overs to crawl to 66/6. Lisa Ramjit had 4-1-5-2 and Claudine Beckford 4-1-9-1. Rendler (47* in 35) and Sugetha Chandrasekhar (15*) guided USA with 10 overs to spare.
