Cricket news round-up – 16 May: Bangladesh beat Ireland, Shakib injured

Shakib Al Hasan injured Bangladesh

Bangladesh made it three successful chases in three attempts, this time against Ireland, in the Ireland Tri-Series. Unfortunately, Shakib Al Hasan had to retire during the chase with a side strain, just two weeks ahead of the World Cup.

In other news, Eoin Morgan was suspended for an ODI for England’s slow over rate; Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada are both eyeing complete recoveries before the World Cup; and BCCI announced India A squads for the series against West Indies A and Sri Lanka.

Bittersweet day for Bangladesh

Bangladesh finished at the top of the league stage in the Ireland Tri-Series. They also finished unbeaten, rounding things off with a comfortable 6-wicket win against Ireland at Malahide.

Paul Stirling (130) and William Porterfield (94) added 174 for the third wicket, but they took 34 overs in the process. As a result, Ireland could put a mere 292/8 as Abu Jayed took 5/58.

The top three Bangladeshi batsmen all scored fifties in response, while the next two scored 35 each. All of them struck at over 5 an over, and Bangladesh cruised home with 7 overs in hand.

Unfortunately, Shakib Al Hasan went down with a side strain immediately after reaching 50 and could not resume batting. With two weeks to go for the World Cup, this was not what Bangladesh wanted to hear.

Morgan banned from Trent Bridge ODI

ICC banned Eoin Morgan for an ODI following England’s slow over rate in the third ODI against Pakistan, at Bristol. This was England’s second offence under Morgan, the previous instance being the Barbados ODI on the West Indies tour earlier this year.

Morgan will now have to sit out of the fourth, on May 17 at Trent Bridge.

Steyn, Rabada on track for World Cup

Cricket South Africa expect Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada to get fit before the upcoming World Cup. In fact, both men are likely to feature in South Africa‘s first match in the tournament, against England.

“There was an issue with KG and there was an issue with Dale, but we feel that those guys are on track. There’s nothing that people should be alarmed about. They’re going to both make full recoveries and be able to take their place at the World Cup,” told coach Ottis Gibson to ESPNCricinfo.
