Cricket news round-up – 15 June: Nine-man England thrash West Indies, Australia still undecided on Stoinis

Chris Gayle bowling West Indies

England beat West Indies by a comfortable 8-wicket margin at the Rose Bowl despite being reduced to nine fit men; Australia to give Marcus Stoinis more time; and the Sri Lankan team management has complained about facilities.

All-round Root clinches it for England

England’s win in the World Cup match against West Indies at the Rose Bowl could hardly have been more comprehensive. Asked to bat, West Indies quickly became 55/3 (of which Chris Gayle got a 41-ball 36) before Nicholas Pooran (63 in 78) and Shimron Hetmyer (39 in 48) added 89.

Then Joe Root (2/27) caught both Hetmyer and Jason Holder off his own bowling. Andre Russell hit a couple of sixes, but Jofra Archer (3/30) and Mark Wood (3/18) bowled straight and fast, bowling out West Indies for 212 in the 45th over.

Unfortunately, England received a double jolt while fielding. Jason Roy pulled a hamstring and left in the 8th over, while Eoin Morgan went down with back spasms. While neither was needed to bat at the Rose Bowl, the twin injuries may bother England as the tournament progresses.

Root (100* in 94) opened batting with Jonny Bairstow (45 in 46) in Roy’s absence and Chris Woakes (40 in 54) batted at three. England chased down the target with 101 balls in hand.

Australia give Stoinis more time

Marcus Stoinis had pulled a side muscle during Australia’s match against India. The injury forced him out of the Pakistan match, and he will not play against Sri Lanka either. Australia are likely to take a call – whether to retain him in the squad or replace him with Mitchell Marsh – after their match against Bangladesh at Trent Bridge on June 20.

“I think that will be the ideal time to really test him out and assess him,” said Australian captain Aaron Finch to ESPNCricinfo. “There will be a call made on that, just based on what he can and can’t do. We’ve seen him batting and running, no problem. Just he hasn’t tried to bowl yet.”

Sri Lanka complain of facilities

Sri Lanka have had a bizarre World Cup thus far, for two of their four matches have been washed out. They had won one and lost one before that, but coach Ashantha de Mel has now complained that they were supposed to green pitches – that did not suit them – for all four matches.

De Mel told Daily News: “For the four matches we have played so far at Cardiff and Bristol, the ICC has prepared a green pitch. At the same venues, the other countries have played on pitches are brown and favourable for high scoring. The pitch being prepared for our match against Australia on Saturday here at The Oval is green.”

De Mel also complained of all nets at the ground not being available for their bowlers and being put up in a hotel at Cardiff that did not have a swimming pool.

County Championship round-up

Derbyshire started the final day at Swansea on 504/4, 120 ahead of Glamorgan. They added another 94 in 16 overs before declaring. Glamorgan played out time, finishing the day on 184/2. Marnus Labuschagne got 83 and Nicholas Selman 70 not out.

Starting at 146/3, Gloucestershire finished the match with 444/6 at Arundel, 93 ahead of Sussex on first innings. Gareth Roderick scored 158 and Ryan Higgins 119 not out, while Ollie Robinson took 3/88.
