Cricket news round-up – 10 June: India beat Australia; Pradeep out for a week

India Australia

India beat Australia by 36 runs at The Oval; Nuwan Pradeep has been ruled out of Sri Lanka’s clash against Bangladesh after injuring his bowling hand; MS Dhoni had to comply with ICC regulations; and England Women beat West Indies Women by 121 runs (DLS method).

India cross the Australia barrier

Helped by Shikhar Dhawan’s 117 at the top and Virat Kohli’s 82 of 77 balls, India put up a formidable 352 runs in their second World Cup clash against Australia at The Oval. Hardik Pandya (48 off 27) and MS Dhoni (27 off 14) played crucial cameos in the final few overs to boost the Indian total and ask Australia to chase down a total never chased in World Cup history.

The Australian reply was stalled by David Warner’s scratchy 84-ball 56 even as the other batsmen tried to up the ante by scoring quickly. Warner’s innings put pressure on the likes of Steven Smith (69 off 70) and Aaron Finch (36 off 35), thereby allowing the asking rate to climb quite early in the innings.

Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up three wickets apiece as even after Alex Carey’s 35-ball 55* at the end of the innings, Australia were bowled out for 316.

Pradeep ruled out of Bangladesh clash

Sri Lanka’s Nuwan Pradeep copped a blow to his bowling hand while training on Sunday and has been ruled out of Tuesday’s clash against Bangladesh. Pradeep was bowling to in the nets when Kusal Perera hit a ball back at him. Pradeep put his right hand up to avert an injury to his head but ended up injuring his bowling hand.

He suffered a dislocated finger and will need a week to recover from the injury, according to SLC. “Nuwan was given treatment at the hospital, while the doctors reset his dislocated finger and the cut on his finger was closed with stitches. He was also administered with antibiotics,” said team manager Ashley de Mel.

MS Dhoni complies with ICC regulations

MS Dhoni wore a new pair of gloves in India’s clash against Australia on Sunday and complied with the ICC regulations regarding cricket equipment after creating a controversy in his last appearance, against South Africa, where he sported the Indian Territorial Army’s ‘Balidaan’ (sacrifice) insignia on his gloves.

Dhoni was subsequently asked by the ICC to remove the insignia and comply with its regulations regarding clothing and equipment, a direction that had prompted the BCCI to ask the ICC for “flexibility”. The ICC had rejected this request and Dhoni put an end to the controversy on Sunday by using a different pair of gloves.

England Women beat by West Indies Women by 121 runs (DLS method)

In a rain-affected clash, England Women defeated West Indies Women by 121 runs at Worcester on Sunday. After the game was reduced to 41 overs per side due to rain England posted 233/7, helped by Tammy Beaumont’s 61. Afy Fletcher picked up three wickets for the West Indies.

More rain meant that the tourists were asked to chase 209 runs from 28 overs, a target they fell well short of as Any Shrubsole and Kate Cross picked up two wickets apiece and ran through the West Indies top order. Shemaine Campbelle top scored for the visitors with 29 runs.)
