1st Test, India vs Bangladesh Day 2 preview: More agony looms for Bangladesh as India look to pile on runs

Mohammed Shami India

Bangladesh had probably felt somewhat optimistic once they got the in-form Rohit Sharma out of the way quickly, but Mayank Agarwal (37*) and Cheteshwar Pujara (43*) quickly restored normalcy back at Holkar Stadium, Indore. India are 86/1 at stumps, just 64 behind on first innings, and will look to secure a massive lead on the second day in the absence of Shakib Al Hasan.

Bangladesh never looked comfortable after Mominul Haque, leading Bangladesh for the first time, opted to bat. Ishant Sharma (2/20) and Umesh Yadav (2/47) beat the outside edge several times before the latter had Imrul Kayes (6) caught at slip. Shortly afterwards, Ishant had Shadman Islam (6) caught behind, and Mohammed Shami (3/27) trapped Mohammad Mithun (13) leg-before.

At this stage Bangladesh were 31/3. Aided by at least three dropped catches, Mominul (37) and Mushfiqur Rahim (43) then added 68. While Mominul was characteristically solid at one end, Mushfiqur played some delectable strokes, the highlight being a straight six off R Ashwin (2/43).

Then Mominul shouldered arms to one from Ashwin that drifted into him to hit the stumps. Mahmudullah (10), all at sea against Ashwin, lost his off-stump while trying to play an ambitious sweep.

The end came rapidly, with Shami getting 2 in 2 to end the second session and Ishant starting the third with another. Ravindra Jadeja, who bowled just 3 overs, did his bit by running out Taijul Islam.

Key players

Cheteshwar Pujara (India): Pujara is yet to score a hundred since that magical tour of Australia last winter. Having already got off to an excellent start, he will look forward to pile on as many runs as possible.

Taijul Islam (Bangladesh): With two greenhorn seamers in the side and no Shakib, Bangladesh’s most experienced bowler has to make dents in the powerful Indian batting line-up if they want to make a fight out of this.

Brief scores

Bangladesh 150 (Mushfiqur Rahim 43; Mohammed Shami 3/27) lead India 86/1 (Cheteshwar Pujara 43*; Abu Jayed 1/21) by 64 runs.

Prediction

India to bat the entire day to secure a massive lead.
