Australia put India to test in the first ODI of the five-match series, at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad, scoring 236/7 and reducing the hosts to 99/4. But MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav made sure there were no further mishaps, and India won with 10 balls to spare. With 4 ODIs to go – not only in the series but also before the World Cup – India will not only try to clinch the series but will also want to test whatever shortcomings they have.

Ahead of the second ODI, at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Jamtha, Nagpur, here is a statistical preview.

Statistical preview

1 win for Australia at Jamtha, against New Zealand in the 2011 World Cup. They have lost all 3 matches against India here.

1 defeat in a bilateral ODI series for India in the past three years, in England last year.

1.077 India’s win-loss ratio against Australia in this decade (14 wins, 13 defeats). However, at home that goes up to 3.333 (10 wins, 3 defeats).

1.5 India’s win-loss ratio at Jamtha (3 wins, 2 defeats). However, all three wins have come against Australia (in 2009-10, 2013-14, and 2017-18), while they lost to Sri Lanka (2009-10) and South Africa (2011 World Cup).

2 bilateral home series defeats for India in this decade, against South Africa in 2015-16 and against Pakistan in 2012-13.

4 members of the current Indian side have scored hundreds at Jamtha – MS Dhoni (2), Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Shikhar Dhawan (1 each).

4 wickets needed by Glenn Maxwell (46) to reach 50 ODI wickets. Maxwell also has 2,367 runs. These 4 wickets will make Maxwell the 9th Australian to the 2,000 run-50 wicket double in ODIs and the 45th Australian to take 50 wickets.

10 runs needed by Ravindra Jadeja (1,990) to score 2,000 ODI runs. Jadeja currently has 171 wickets. If he gets the runs he will become the 2nd Indian (after Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar) to the 2,000 run-150 wicket double in ODIs and the 25th Indian to score 2,000 runs.

13 fifty-plus scores for Dhoni in India-Australia ODIs. One more fifty will take him past Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist. Rohit has 12 fifties at this stage. Tendulkar leads the list with 24 fifties while Ricky Ponting has 15. In the current Australian squad, Aaron Finch has 8 fifty-plus scores against India.

25 months since Australia last one an ODI series or tournament. Their last win came in early 2017, when they beat Pakistan 4-1 at home. And their last win away from home was back in August 2016.

499 ODI wins for India, which means they are one win away from being the second ODI team to complete the 500-mark. Only Australia (558) have won more ODIs.
