Bumrah, David shine as Mumbai eliminate Delhi

The Mumbai Indians knocked out the Delhi Capitals and sent the Royal Challengers Bangalore through to the playoffs after their dramatic five-wicket win over Rishabh Pant’s side at the Wankhede Stadium. Having restricted Delhi to 159 for six thanks to a superb three-wicket haul from Jasprit Bumrah, Mumbai chased down the target in the final over after some pivotal contributions from Ishan Kishan (48 off 35) and Tim David (34 off 11).

In a must-win game to reach the playoffs, the Capitals started poorly after being sent in to bat by Rohit Sharma as the Mumbai pacers wreaked havoc with the new ball. Daniel Sams had David Warner fending one to short third man in the third over before Jasprit Bumrah removed Mitchell Marsh for a golden duck, with Rohit Sharma taking a sharp low catch at first slip to dismiss the Australian. Bumrah also picked up the wicket of the returning Prithvi Shaw, who was undone by a venomous bouncer from the pacer to leave DC reeling at 37 for 3 at the end of the powerplay.

Sarfaraz Khan played a stunning pull shot for six against Bumrah to get off the mark but was caught behind against Mayank Markande in the ninth over. Coming in at number six, Rovman Powell bided his time to start his innings after the flurry of wickets, but the West Indian switched through the gears in the 12th over, smashing Hrithik Shokeen for two sixes and a four. Powell also launched another couple of sixes against Mayank Markande and Jasprit Bumrah but was eventually bested by a searing yorker from the MI pacer on 43.

Rishabh Pant hit two fours and a six in a 19-run 16th over from Ramandeep Singh, and despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the Capitals managed to score 53 runs in the final five overs to finish with a respectable total of 159.

In response, Mumbai struggled to get out of the blocks as Rohit Sharma took ten deliveries to get off the mark before departing in the sixth over for a 13-ball 2. Ishan Kishan hit two fours and a six in the second over from Anrich Nortje, but the left-hander struggled with the two-paced nature of the Wankhede pitch as Mumbai managed just 27 runs in the powerplay. MI finally picked up the pace against the spinners in the middle overs, with Ishan Kishan and Dewald Brevis hitting a combined five sixes against Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel to keep MI in the hunt.

Kuldeep finally broke the 51-run stand in the 12th over with Kishan holing out to long-on, and Brevis departed three overs later as he chopped on against Shardul Thakur. Thakur should have had another wicket off his next delivery when Tim David edged behind to the keeper, only for the umpire to turn down the appeal and Rishabh Pant to opt against taking a review.

That decision proved fatal for the Capitals as David smashed 34 runs and six boundaries off his next ten deliveries to turn the game on its head before Ramandeep Singh took Mumbai over the line with five balls to spare.
