Women’s T20 World Cup 2014: Teams, summary, winner, most runs and wickets

Women's T20 World Cup 2014 Australia

The fourth edition of the ICC Women’s World T20 took place in Bangladesh in March-April of 2014. Like the previous three editions, this was also a joint tournament along with the Men’s version and hence did not get the focus it deserved. All the matches were played in two venues, Sylhet and Dhaka. There were talks of including Cox’s Bazar as a venue, but it did not materialize as the ground was under development. One big change in 2014 was the inclusion of two new teams and the total team count changed from eight to ten.

The host Bangladesh and Ireland Women’s team took part in the tournament for the first time. Bangladesh even recorded their first victory as they beat Sri Lanka Women by just three runs. Each group had five teams and Group A was shared by Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. Three teams finished with six points each with three wins but due to better net run rate Australia and South Africa moved to the knock-out stage.

In Group B, England and West Indies finished with six points each and moved to the semi-final. India finished third in the group with two wins and four points, but it was not enough for them to progress further. The Day/Night final was an Australia vs England affair which the Australian Women won comfortably by six wickets under the leadership of Meg Lanning, who top-scored in the final with 44.
