Basin Reserve is the only ground in the country with a Historic Place Status. Located in Wellington, the national capital, The Basin dates back to 1868, can host 11,600 people, and serves as the home ground for Wellington in New Zealand domestic cricket. The ground has 63 Tests, 32 ODIs, and 12 T20Is as well as rugby and AFL matches.
Six seasons ago, Brendon McCullum had famously scored 302 not out at The Basin – till date the only triple hundred by a New Zealand in Test cricket and the third-highest score in all Test cricket – to save the Test (thus win the series) against India.
For India, their most famous performances came in the previous century in a cliffhanger, when Mohammad Azharuddin (103*) and Sachin Tendulkar (113) scored two splendid hundreds against Simon Doull (7/65 and 2/49). The match took an interesting turn when New Zealand were reduced to 74/5 in pursuit of 213 before Craig McMillan (74*) and Chris Cairns (61) saw them to a 4-wicket win.
