IPL 2023 – Top 5 Young Players

The Indian Premier League has been a breeding ground for some of the most prodigious talents in world cricket, launching the careers of some of the biggest stars in the game by allowing them to play on the biggest stage. Season 16 of the IPL was no different, with plenty of talented youngsters impressing for their franchisees in pressure situations in front of packed crowds.

The likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, and Matheesha Pathirana shone for their franchisees this season, and here are our top five young players of IPL 2023.

5. Akash Madhwal (Mumbai Indians)

The Mumbai Indians scouting department struck gold again as Akash Madhwal enjoyed a breakthrough season for the five-time champions, displaying tremendous composure and ability with the ball. The Uttarakhand pacer resolved Mumbai’s death-bowling woes with his skiddy action and accurate yorkers, picking up 14 wickets in just eight matches at a commendable economy rate of 8.58. Madhwal also single-handedly powered Mumbai to victory in the Eliminator, running through the LSG batting unit with his phenomenal spell of 5 for 5 in Chennai.

4. Prabhsimran Singh (Punjab Kings)

After spending four seasons on the sidelines, Prabhsimran Singh finally got an extended run at the top of the order for the Punjab Kings, and the youngster repaid the faith in IPL 2023 with some tremendous performances with the bat. The wicket-keeper was the perfect foil to Shikhar Dhawan at the top of the order for Punjab, scoring 358 runs at a terrific strike rate of 150 in 14 innings this season.

3. Sai Sudarshan (Gujarat Titans)

After showing a few glimpses of his potential in IPL 2022, Sai Sudarshan made his mark this season with a phenomenal campaign for the Gujarat Titans. Sudarshan showcased all the tools of a modern-day T20 batter, displaying the ability to clear the ropes against pace and spin with a wide arrange of shots all across the ground. The left-hander scored 362 runs at a strike rate of 141 in IPL 2023, including an outstanding 47-ball 96 in the final against CSK.

2. Matheesha Pathirana (Chennai Super Kings)

20-year-old pace bowling sensation Matheesha Pathirana was a revelation for the Chennai Super Kings, playing a major role on their road to a fifth title with his unorthodox action and searing yorkers. Pathirana was MS Dhoni’s go-to bowler at the death in IPL 2023 and picked up 19 wickets this season with an economy of just 8.05 in the last five overs of the innings.

1. Yashasvi Jaiswal (Rajasthan Royals) 

IPL 2023 saw the meteoric rise of Yashasvi Jaiswal, with the young left-hander on the cusp of receiving a national call-up on the back of his sensational performances with the bat. Jaiswal outclassed the likes of Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson at the top of the order for the Royals, scoring the most runs by an uncapped batter in a single season in IPL history, smashing 625 runs at a sensational strike rate of 163.6 this year.
