The Indian Premier League has been a
breeding ground for some of the most prodigious talents in world cricket,
launching the careers of some of the biggest stars in the game by allowing them
to play on the biggest stage. Season 16 of the IPL was no different, with
plenty of talented youngsters impressing for their franchisees in pressure
situations in front of packed crowds.
The likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma,
and Matheesha Pathirana shone for their franchisees this season, and here are
our top five young players of IPL 2023.
Madhwal (Mumbai Indians)
The Mumbai Indians scouting department
struck gold again as Akash Madhwal enjoyed a breakthrough season for the
five-time champions, displaying tremendous composure and ability with the ball.
The Uttarakhand pacer resolved Mumbai’s death-bowling woes with his skiddy
action and accurate yorkers, picking up 14 wickets in just eight matches at a
commendable economy rate of 8.58. Madhwal also single-handedly powered Mumbai
to victory in the Eliminator, running through the LSG batting unit with his
phenomenal spell of 5 for 5 in Chennai.
Singh (Punjab Kings)
After spending four seasons on the
sidelines, Prabhsimran Singh finally got an extended run at the top of the
order for the Punjab Kings, and the youngster repaid the faith in IPL 2023 with
some tremendous performances with the bat. The wicket-keeper was the perfect
foil to Shikhar Dhawan at the top of the order for Punjab, scoring 358 runs at
a terrific strike rate of 150 in 14 innings this season.
Sudarshan (Gujarat Titans)
After showing a few glimpses of his
potential in IPL 2022, Sai Sudarshan made his mark this season with a
phenomenal campaign for the Gujarat Titans. Sudarshan showcased all the tools
of a modern-day T20 batter, displaying the ability to clear the ropes against
pace and spin with a wide arrange of shots all across the ground. The
left-hander scored 362 runs at a strike rate of 141 in IPL 2023, including an
outstanding 47-ball 96 in the final against CSK.
Pathirana (Chennai Super Kings)
20-year-old pace bowling sensation
Matheesha Pathirana was a revelation for the Chennai Super Kings, playing a
major role on their road to a fifth title with his unorthodox action and
searing yorkers. Pathirana was MS Dhoni’s go-to bowler at the death in IPL 2023
and picked up 19 wickets this season with an economy of just 8.05 in the last
five overs of the innings.
Jaiswal (Rajasthan Royals)
IPL 2023 saw the meteoric rise of Yashasvi
Jaiswal, with the young left-hander on the cusp of receiving a national call-up
on the back of his sensational performances with the bat. Jaiswal outclassed
the likes of Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson at the top of the order for the Royals,
scoring the most runs by an uncapped batter in a single season in IPL history,
smashing 625 runs at a sensational strike rate of 163.6 this year.
