Indian Premier League 2016: Teams, summary, winner, most runs and wickets

Indian Premier League IPL 2019 12 Sunrisers Hyderabad SRH

This was a rather unique season. There was no Chennai Super Kings or Rajasthan Royals – both were suspended following their roles in the betting scandal – and in their place, on a temporary basis, there were two new teams – Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant, comprising mostly of players from the suspended two sides.

There was no Chennai taking their usual place in the knockout rounds, and the two new franchises had vastly different campaigns – Gujarat finished atop the table, Pune somehow avoided the wooden-spoon position with a late burst, that position going to Kings XI Punjab. Pune were led by MS Dhoni, but something just didn’t click there. Dhoni looked out of place outside Chennai, irrespective of how much the personnel around him remained the same.

Royal Challengers Bangalore, for once, had a decent campaign, with Mitchell Starc doing wonders in their bowling line-up. They finished second in the table, with Sunrisers Hyderabad finishing one spot below, and Kolkata Knight Riders occupying the last qualification spot.

In the knockouts, Bangalore made it to the final at the first time of asking, beating Gujarat by four wickets. Hyderabad then saw off Kolkata and Gujarat in the Eliminator and Qualifier 2 respectively to seal their place in the trophy clash in Bengaluru.

The final was a thriller. Hyderabad set the home side 209 to win, thanks to David Warner’s 69 and contributions from Yuvraj Singh and Ben Cutting. Bangalore knocked off 114 runs in the first 10.3 overs, with Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli scoring half-centuries, but a collapse thereafter meant they fell short of their maiden triumph by eight runs.

It was a fine tournament.
