England vs India ODI Series Report Card

England vs India ODI Series Report Card

India followed up their stellar performance in the T20Is with another victory in the ODI series as the Men in Blue beat the reigning world champions 2-1 in their backyard. After taking one game apiece in London, India clinched the victory in the final encounter in Manchester to win their first ODI series in England in eight years.

There were plenty of eye-catching performances from Rishabh Pant, Reece Topley, and Hardik Pandya during the three matches, and here is our report card for the series.

Hardik Pandya – 9/10

After struggling with back issues over the past couple of years, Hardik Pandya marked his return to the ODI format for the first time in over 15 months with a player of the series performance against England. The all-rounder finished the series as India’s second-highest run-scorer and third-highest wicket-taker, registering ODI career-best figures of 4 for 24 in the decider at Old Trafford before following that up with an equally impressive 71 of 55 in the run chase.

Virat Kohli – 5/10

Virat Kohli’s terrible run of form in 2022 continued in the 50-over format against England as the number three managed just 33 runs in the series. Adding to the frustration, Kohli was dismissed in a similar fashion once again in both ODIs, with the right-hander poking his bat outside off-stump against the English seamers and feathering two edges to Jos Buttler behind the wicket.

Joe Root – 3/10

It was an ODI series to forget for Joe Root against India, as the Englishman was unable to convert his incredible form in Test cricket into the 50-over format. The number three was dismissed for a pair of ducks at the Oval and Old Trafford and managed just 11 runs across three innings, leaving his place in England’s ODI side under threat for the upcoming series against South Africa.

Rishabh Pant – 8/10

After enduring a slow start to his white-ball career for India, Rishabh Pant finally announced his arrival in the limited overs format with his maiden ODI ton at Old Trafford that helped the Men in Blue secure the series victory. Pant finished the series as the highest run-scorer, rescuing India from 74 for 4 in Manchester and becoming only the second Indian after Virat Kohli to make a 125+ score in a run chase while batting at number four or lower.

Reece Topley – 8.5/10

Reece Topley finished as the highest wicket-taker in the series, with the left-armer picking up nine scalps at an incredible economy rate of just 3.7 across the three matches. Topley registered the best figures by an Englishman in ODI cricket at Lord’s – 6 for 24 – and followed that up with another impressive new-ball performance at Old Trafford as he dismissed India’s big three at the top of the order with his metronomic line and length.
