Cricket news round-up – January 21: England retain Basil D’Oliveira Trophy, Zimbabwe defy Sri Lanka

South Africa England

England beat South Africa by an innings to retain the Basil D’Oliveira Trophy; Zimbabwe stonewalled to Sri Lanka at bay for a second day; Australia and West Indies won at the Under-19 World Cup; and Sana Mir will not feature in the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup.

England go 2-1 up, retain Trophy

England bowled out South Africa for 237 before lunch on Day 5 to win the Port Elizabeth Test by an innings and 53 runs to go 2-1 up in the series and retain the Basil D’Oliveira Trophy.

South Africa were quickly reduced to 138/9 before Keshav Maharaj (71) and Dane Paterson (39*) threw their bats around, adding 99 for the last wicket in just 77 balls. Joe Root finished with 4/87 and Mark Wood with 3/32.

Zimbabwe keep defying

After scoring 189/2 on Day 1 at Harare, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 358 on Day 2. However, they used up 148 overs in the process, halting Sri Lanka’s quest for a quick win. Craig Ervine stretched his score to 85 in the morning before Sikandar Raza (41) and Donald Tiripano (44*) resisted later in the day. Lasith Embuldeniya finished with 5/114 and Suranga Lakmal with 3/53.

Tiripano took out Oshada Fernando later in the day before Sri Lanka finished the day on 42/1, still 316 behind.

Australia Under-19s flatten Nigeria

Australia had an easy day out in the Under-19 World Cup after Nigeria opted to bat. Tanveer Sangha took 5/14 and Bradley Simpson 3/11 as they shot out Nigeria for 61 in 30.3 overs. Opener Olayinka Olaleye (21) was the only one to reach double figures.

Sam Fanning (30*) and Jake Fraser-McGurk (23*) then saw Australia home inside 8 overs, well before lunch.

West Indies Under-19s win two in a row

West Indies Under-19s followed their win against Australia with one against England, this time by 71 runs by the DLS Method. Kevlon Anderson (86*) and Nyeem Young (66) first took them to 267/7 as Lewis Goldsworthy got 2/28.

England started slowly, reaching 120/2 in response but taking 29 overs for that. With the asking rate mounting, they lost wickets to Young (5/45) in pursuit of quick runs. They were 184/9 in 43.4 overs when rain stopped play for the day.
