Delhi Capitals beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2019 Eliminator; Velocity beat Trailblazers in the Women’s T20 Challenge; and rain washed out the ODIs, between England and Pakistan, and Scotland and Afghanistan.

Delhi make it to top three, Hyderabad knocked out

Delhi won the first Playoff match in their history, after losing 4 – in once each in 2008 and 2009 and twice in 2012. They asked Hyderabad to bat, then restricted them to 162/8. Five Hyderabad batsmen all reached 20, but Martin Guptill’s 19-ball 36 was the highest. Keemo Paul had 4-0-32-3 and Ishant Sharma 4-0-34-2.

Prithvi Shaw (56 in 38) then added 66 for the opening stand with Shikhar Dhawan, in just 45 balls. Then Khaleel Ahmed (2.5-0-24-2) struck twice, as did Rashid Khan (4-1-15-2), and Delhi were suddenly left to chase 52 in 32 balls with 5 wickets left.

Then Rishabh Pant (21-ball 49) swung things Delhi’s way, leaving them to score 12 off the last 2 overs. But Delhi lost 3 wickets, two off unnecessary attempted slogs, one obstructing the field. Then, with 2 to score off 2 balls with 2 wickets in hand, Paul pulled Khaleel for four.

Velocity beat Trailblazers despite bizarre collapse

Harleen Deol top-scored with a 40-ball 43 at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur, as Velocity restricted Trailblazers to 112/6. The bowling was led by Ekta Bisht (4-0-13-2), Amelia Kerr (3-0-21-2), Shikha Pandey (4-0-18-1), and Sushree Dibyadarshini (3-1-14-1).

Shafali Varma (34 in 31 balls) and Danni Wyatt (46 in 35) then led the chase. The match was all but over when Velocity needed 2 in 20 balls with 8 wickets in hand, but then they lost 5 for 0 in 7 balls. Then Dibyararshini steered Deepti Sharma for two to seal the match. Sharma had 4-0-14-4, Deol 3-0-19-1, and Sophie Ecclestone 4-0-13-0.

Damp squib at The Oval…

The first ODI between England and Pakistan, at The Oval, had to be called off after 19 overs of play due to rain. Asked to bat, Pakistan scored 80/2 during this period. Imam-ul-Haq remained unbeaten on 42.

The highlight of the truncated day was a searing spell from Jofra Archer, who bothered the batsmen with his pace and movement time and again, getting Fakhar Zaman to edge one early on. The other wicket, of Babar Azam, was also off an edge – induced by Liam Plunkett.

… and at Edinburgh

Rain prevented any play from taking place in the first ODI of the 2-match series between Scotland and Afghanistan, at Grange Cricket Club, Raeburn Place, Edinburgh. The match was supposed to mark the captaincy debut for Gulbadin Naib, Afghanistan’s captain for the World Cup.

The teams will meet again on May 10 – if there is any cricket, that is – before Afghanistan move on to England for their World Cup tour
