Cricket news round-up – 8 June: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka match washed out

Pakistan Sri Lanka World Cup rain

The rain-abandoned match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka gave both teams one point each. Adam Zampa gets a demerit point while Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli get in trouble too.

Match called off

The 11th match of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 between Pakistan and Sri Lanka was abandoned due to heavy rain. After a couple of inspections, the umpires decided to call off the game without a ball being bowled as the outfield was unplayable.  Both teams have won one and lost one match each. Pakistan were defeated by West Indies by seven wickets and then won against England by 14 runs. Sri Lanka won their last match against Afghanistan after being thrashed by New Zealand in their opening match.

Both teams have earned a point each. Currently, Sri Lanka are at third position followed by Pakistan at the fourth on the points table. Sri Lanka will face Bangladesh on June 11 at Bristol whereas Pakistan will take on Australia at Taunton on June 12.

Demerit point for Zampa

Australian bowler Adam Zampa has earned one demerit point for breaching ICC Code of conduct during Match 10 of the World Cup 2019 against West Indies. He was charged for using an “audible obscenity” during the second half of the match at Trent Bridge. He was reprimanded by ICC for breaching Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

This occurred in the 29th over of the West Indies innings when the umpires heard him of using an obscenity. Since Zampa admitted offense, there was no need for a further formal hearing. ICC issued him with one demerit point. Players get banned after receiving four or more demerit points within a 24-month period.

ICC rejects BCCI’s Request

BCCI requested ICC to allow MS Dhoni to wear the gloves sporting the ‘Balidaan’ insignia. Vinod Rai, the Chairman of the BCCI’s Committee of Administration said, “We have already sent the request for ICC permission today morning saying that if you people feel that permission is required, we’ll seek it.”

But ICC wasn’t keen to accept the request. ICC sent an email to BCCI explaining the G1 clause of ICC’s Clothing and Equipment Rules and Regulations that Dhoni had violated. The clause doesn’t allow players or team officials to convey messages “which relate to political, religious or racial activities or causes.”  Dhoni also violated the regulations for the World Cup related to what can be displayed on wicketkeeper’s gloves.

Virat Kohli Fined

While Virat Kohli is in England busy leading the Indian team in the ongoing World Cup, he faced trouble with the Gurugram municipal corporation. Kohli was charged for wastage of drinking water as one of his domestic help was found washing his car with drinking water.

The GMC imposed Rs. 500 fine on Kohli due to this issue. There is a massive water crisis in north India during summer and a similar fine was imposed on other residents also in that locality.
