Cricket news round-up – 2 May: Chennai choke Delhi, Sangakkara named MCC President

MCC named Kumar Sangakkara as their first non-British President; in the IPL, Chennai Super Kings inflicted a massive defeat on Delhi Capitals; and Pakistan won their tour match against Leicestershire comfortably.

Landmark honour for Sanga

MCC named Kumar Sangakkara as their next President, and their first of non-British origin. Sangakkara is their Honorary Life Member since 2012. His tenure will last from October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2020.

Sangakkara’s MCC Spirit of Cricket Lecture in 2011 is considered among the greatest in history of the sport. He has been an active member on MCC’s World Cricket Committee since 2012.

Chennai thrash Delhi by 80 runs

Chennai Super Kings more or less ensured a spot in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2019, to be played at their home fortress of Chepauk.

At the same venue last night, Suresh Raina (59 in 37 balls) and MS Dhoni (44* in 22) helped Chennai reach 179/4 despite them reaching 100 in 14.3 overs. Jagadeesha Suchith had figures of 2/28.

Delhi Capitals were then shot out for 99 by Imran Tahir (3.3-0-12-4) and Ravindra Jadeja (3-0-9-3). Shreyas Iyer scored 44 of these runs, off 31 balls.

Pakistan choke Leicestershire

Pakistan beat Leicestershire comfortably in their tour match, at Grace Road. Babar Azam (101 in 63 balls) added 104 in 66 balls with Fakhar Zaman (52 in 30), and another 65 in 34 with Asif Ali. The Pakistanis finished on 200/6 even as Ben Mike had 4-0-38-3 and Dieter Klein 4-0-31-2.

Leicestershire were then quickly reduced to 81/8 before Mike and Callum Parkinson added 59 to provide some respectability to their score. They were bowed out for 142, Shaheen Afridi (2.2-0-12-2), Imad Wasim (4-0-19-2), and Haris Sohail (3-0-17-1) leading the damage.

Royal London One-Day Cup round-up

At New Road, Wayne Parnell (5/24) and Charlie Morris (2/17) bowled out Nottinghamshire for 121 in just 32 overs. Chris Nash top-scored with 51. Tom Fell (48*) then guided Worcestershire to a 5-wicket win.

Sam Robson (106) and Nick Gubbins (90) helped Middlesex pile up 364/6 at Radlett. Somerset, reduced to 146/7, were then bowled out for 246. Nathan Sowter took 3/50 and Toby Roland-Jones 2/35.

Ricardo Vasconcelos’ 118 and 58s from Richard Levi and Josh Cobb helped Northampton post 351 at Northampton. Rain reduced Yorkshire’s target to 175 in 25 overs. They reached there with 2 balls to spare, Tom Kohler-Cadmore top-scoring with 67.
