Cricket news round-up – 16 July: Taufel reacts to the overthrow, Kohli, Bumrah still top ICC Rankings, Curran scalps 6

Simon Taufel said that England should have been awarded five runs for the overthrow. ICC has announced ODI Rankings post the World Cup. Fakhar Zaman will begin his Country stint. India A registered their second win of the series against West Indies A.

Error of judgement by Umpires, says Simon Taufel

The overthrow that hit Ben Stokes’ bat and deflected to the boundary in the last over of England’s chase changed the fate of the match. England were awarded six for that overthrow but according to Simon Taufel, the umpires made an ‘error of judgement’. Taufel is currently part of the MCC’s laws sub-committee that makes the rules governing cricket. He said, it was a clear mistake and England should have been awarded five runs, not six.

He explained that the error was the timing of the act.”The judgment error was the timing of when the fielder threw the ball. The act of the overthrow starts when the fielder releases the ball. That’s the act. It becomes an overthrow from the instant of the throw.”

Law 19.8, pertaining to “Overthrow or wilful act of fielder”, says: “If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the wilful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be any runs for penalties awarded to either side, and the allowance for the boundary, and the runs completed by the batsmen, together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant of the throw or act.”

But the footage shows that at the moment of overthrow by Martin Guptill, Stokes and Adil Rashid had nor crossed for their second run. So according to the law, it should be one run plus the boundary runs.

Curran’s 6-wicket haul

The match between Australia XI and England Lions saw the former ending their first innings with 397 on board.  Travid Head finished with an unbeaten 139 and Mitchell Marsh scored 38. Sam Curran who took one wicket on the first day ended with 6/95. He ran through the entire lower order but missed a hattrick in the 97th over. Lewis Georgy took another wicket on day two to end with 3/65.

In reply, England Lions’ top order looked shaky from the beginning. Only Dominic Sibley could provide some stability with his 191-ball 74. There were contributions from James Bracey (37), Sam Hain (39), and Sam Curran (32*) in the middle order to take the total to 232/6 in 77.5 overs. Jackson Bird and Chris Tremain took two wickets each.

India A registers second win

India A got their second win of the series by comfortably beating the hosts, West Indies by 65 runs. A solid base was established by the openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shubhman Gill as they added 151 runs in the partnership. Gillbeas was the first to go for 62 and Ruturaj soon followed after scoring 85.

Key contributions from middle-order including 27 from Manish Pandey, 24 from Ishan Kishan and 23 from Hanuma Vihari took them to 255/8. On the other hand, Romario Shepherd took 4/36.

West Indies A had an early collapse and by the 30th over they were 108/7 and effectively out of the match. Despite Raymon Reifer’s 71 and Shepherd’s unbeaten 34, they were all out for 190. Navdeep was the star for the Indians as he finished with 5/46. Rahul Chahar finished with two wickets.

Zaman replaces Marsh

Fakhar Zaman will begin his County journey soon. He has been signed by Glamorgan for the first half of their Vitality Blast campaign. Zaman will replace the injured Shaun Marsh who was ruled out of the World Cup with a fractured forearm at the last stage. He developed the injury while batting in the nets against Pat Cummins.  But Marsh in all likelihood will be available for last six club games.

Zaman did not have a great outing in the World Cup 2019. He could score only 186 runs in eight innings with only one score above 50. But he was the leading run-scorer of Lahore Qalandars’ in PSL 2019. His notable  T20 record is the reason why he has been picked as Marsh’ replacement.
