Cricket news round-up – 15 April 2019: Australia recall Smith, Warner for World Cup; Chennai, Delhi win

Australia have recalled Steven Smith and David Warner to their 15-member squad for the upcoming World Cup. In IPL 2019, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals beat Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively, while Zimbabwe clinched the ODI series against UAE.

Australia announce World Cup squad

Australia have recalled the shunned duo of Steven Smith and David Warner to the squad for the 2019 World Cup. Smith and Warner have not played international cricket since their one-year ban in March 2018.

They have left out Peter Handscomb and Ashton Turner, both of whom had done well in India, as well as the injured Josh Hazlewood. The squad, led by Aaron Finch, reads:

Chennai overpower Kolkata

Chennai beat Kolkata by 5 wickets at Eden Gardens in the first match of Sunday’s double-header at IPL 2019. Chris Lynn (82 in 51 balls) got Kolkata off to a fluent start, but Imran Tahir (4/27) and Shardul Thakur (2/18) restricted them to 161/8.

Kolkata bowled well, reducing Chennai to 81/4. At that stage Chennai needed 81 in 53 balls. They needed 41 from 26 when Sunil Narine trapped MS Dhoni leg-before. Kolkata even brought it down to 24 off 12, but Suresh Raina (58* in 42) and Ravindra Jadeja (31* in 17) saw them home.

Delhi crush Hyderabad

Later at night, Delhi beat Hyderabad by 39 runs. Colin Munro (40 in 24) and Shreyas Iyer (45 in 40) took Delhi to 155/7 despite Khaleel Ahmed’s 3/30 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 2/33..

David Warner (51 in 47) and Jonny Bairstow (41 and 31) then got Hyderabad off to a flier. At one stage they needed 84 in 61 balls with all 10 wickets standing, but they could add only 44 to that. Keemo Paul (3/22) took the initial wickets before Kagiso Rabada (4/22) and Chris Morris (3/17) finished things off.

Zimbabwe clinch series

Zimbabwe have taken a 3-0 lead in the 4-ODI series against UAE. At Harare Sports Club, the hosts put up 307/4 thanks to Sean Williams (109* in 84), Craig Ervine (64 in 71), and Peter Moor (58* in 52).

UAE never recovered from 15/3. Muhammad Rizwan (49) counterattacked, while CP Rizwan batted for over two hours for his 47. But eventually they were bowled out for 176. Ryan Burl took 4/32; he was supported by Kyle Jarvis (2/20) and Sikandar Raza (2/44).

County Championship Division One roundup

Hampshire, requiring 252 to make Yorkshire bat again, were reduced to 59/8 before Liam Dawson (92) and Keith Barker (64) added 131, but it was not enough. They were bowled out for 208. Steven Patterson took 4/47 and Ben Coad 3/27.

Nottinghamshire needed 140 to save an innings defeat against Somerset. They reached 66/2, and even 111/6, before Jack Leach (6/36) and Jack Brooks (4/40) bowled them out for 126.

Surrey had started their second innings 53 behind, but the deficit was wiped out quickly. They scored 324/6 (Rory Burns 98, Simon Harmer 5/88) against Essex to draw the match.

Kent needed 123 to win after Harry Podmore (5/62) bowled out Warwickshire for 280 (Tim Ambrose 107). They reached there in 19.4 overs, for the loss of 2 wickets.

County Championship Division Two roundup

Chasing 212 against Durham, Sussex were 16/2 before Stiaan van Zyl (101*) steered them to a 6-wicket win.

Ricardo Vasconcelos (184), Rob Keogh (150), and Rob Newton (101) all slammed hundreds in Northamptonshire’s 750 against Glamorgan; the match ended in a draw.

Derbyshire, 59 behind Gloucestershire on first innings, finished the match with 388/3 (Wayne Madsen 204*, Alex Hughes 109*).

Worcestershire bowled Leicestershire out for 233 to win by an innings and 18 runs after the latter were 124/2. Charlie Morris took 7/45.

Lancashire bowled out Middlesex for 200 (Glenn Maxwell 5/40, James Anderson 3/29). The target was 39, and they won by 7 wickets.
