India

India beat Bangladesh by 28 runs at Edgbaston to qualify for the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup. Bangladesh are no longer in the hunt. Not too far away, at Grace Road, Australia Women gained the first 2 points in the Women’s Ashes. And at Sedbergh, James Anderson picked up his 950th First-Class wicket.

India qualify, heartbreak for Bangladesh

India triumphed at Edgbaston by 23 runs despite Bangladesh’s spirited charge. Rohit Sharma (104 in 92 balls) slammed his fourth hundred of the tournament, adding 180 for the first wicket with KL Rahul (77 in 92).

Virat Kohli (26 in 27), Rishabh Pant (48 in 41), and MS Dhoni (35 in 33) all contributed, but India were pegged back by some outstanding bowling from Mustafizur Rahman (5/59) and Shakib Al Hasan (10-0-41-1). India finished on 314/9.

In response, four of the top five Bangladeshis scored between 22 and 33. Shakib top-scored with 66 in 74 balls, but kept running out of partners. The early damage was done mostly by Hardik Pandya (3/60).

Bangladesh were 179/6 at this point. Then Sabbir Rahman (36 in 36) and Mohammad Saifuddin (51* in 38) almost turned the table with, adding 66 in 56 balls, but Jasprit Bumrah (4/55) turned out more than a handful for Bangladesh. They finished on 286.

Australia Women draw first blood

Australia Women took a 2-0 lead in the Women’s Ashes. Ellyse Perry (3/43) reduced England Women to 19/4 after Australia put them in at Grace Road. Nat Sciver (64 in 95) provided the only resistance of the innings, adding 54 with Katherine Brunt and 31 with Laura Marsh.

Sophie Ecclestone hit out lustily, but England eventually folded for 177. Apart from Perry, most of the damage was done by Megan Schutt (2/19), Jess Jonassen (2/21), and Ashleigh Gardner (2/27).

Alyssa Healy (66 in 71) led the response. Australia Women had things firmly under control at 92/3 before a mini-collapse left them at 125/6. The seventh wicket fell at 150 and the eighth at 167.

Delissa Kimmince added two singles to the score. Then she lofted Brunt over mid-wicket for four. With 5 to get, Brunt bowled a wide down the leg, Sarah Taylor failed to gather it, and Australia Women got their 2 points.

County Championship Division 1 roundup

Dominic Sibley slammed an unbeaten 207 at Canterbury to help Warwickshire finish the day on 400/3 in response to Kent’s 585/7. Sibley added 221 with the opening stand with Will Rhodes (109).

Nick Browne (163) and Ravi Bopara (135) helped Essex declare at 519/9, with a lead of 306, at Trent Bridge. Nottinghamshire finished the day on 100/5. They need to bat out the final day.

Chasing 418 at Taunton, Hampshire lost Oliver Soames for a duck before finishing the day on 12/1. Somerset had earlier declared on 358/8 with contributions from Azhar Ali (79), Tom Banton (70), and Tom Abell (58).

Yorkshire were 303/9 at Scarborough after being 94 for no loss, 162/2, 225/4, and even 276/6. Eight batsmen reached double-figures, but only Adam Lyth (68) got a fifty. Sam Curran took 3/75. Yorkshire now lead Surrey by 268 runs.

Graham Onions (5/93) bowled out Durham for 281 at Sedbergh despite Cameron Bancroft’s 77. During the course of the innings, James Anderson (2/39) trapped Graham Clark leg-before to reach the 950-wicket landmark in First-Class cricket. Dane Vilas (74*) took Lancashire to 204/7 by stumps; their lead is now 260.

Having declared on 557/6, Derbyshire reduced Middlesex to 250/6 at Derby before Dawid Malan (177*) and John Simpson (91*) helped the latter finished the day on 436/6.

Brett D’Oliveira slammed 103 at Cardiff, adding 68 for the last wicket, to help Worcestershire reach 370 against Michael Hogan (5/62). Nicholas Selman (42*) and Marnus Labuschagne (90*) then took Glamorgan to 137/1 by stumps. The lead has swelled to 216.

Northamptonshire thrashed Sussex by 393 runs at Hove. Resuming on 212/4, Northants managed to reach 331 thanks to Ricardo Vasconcelos (88) and Nathan Buck (51). Ollie Robinson took 4/69, Delray Rawlins 3/34, and Abidine Sakande 3/74. Chasing 499, Sussex were then shot out for 105 by Ben Sanderson (4/18), Brett Hutton (4/32), and Buck (2/21).
