CPL 2019: Guyana Amazon Warriors vs Barbados Tridents, Match 6, Providence: Preview, predictions, likely XIs

Nicholas Pooran CPL Caribbean Premier League

Guyana Amazon Warriors will host Barbados Tridents for Match 6 of CPL 2019, at Providence Stadium, Guyana, on September 8. While the Tridents are yet to play a match in the tournament, the Amazon Warriors have already played two and won both.

Guyana had started with a 13-run win against St Lucia Zouks, a margin that flatters the latter, given the one-sidedness of the contest. They then blew St Kitts and Nevis away, by 8 wickets.

Shimron Hetmyer and Shoaib Malik are both among runs, while Chanderpaul Hemraj and Keemo Paul have been explosive in their cameos. On the other hand, Shadab Khan, Romario Shepherd, and Chris Green have all been difficult to score off.

Barbados boast of big hitters like Johnson Charles, Asif Ali, and Jonathan Carter, with Shai Hope providing the necessary stability. Ashley Nurse, Wahab Riaz, and Sandeep Lamichhane form an excellent trio, combined with Hayden Walsh, who was excellent in the recently concluded Global T20.

Towering above all is Jason Holder, with his probing bowling, big hitting, excellent fielding, and inspiring leadership. All in all, the Amazon Warriors will not find it easy.

Head to head

The sides have met 11 times, of which Guyana have won 7 and Barbados 4.

Key players

Shadab Khan (Guyana Amazon Warriors): Shadab’s tournament figures so far – 8-0-36-5 – are pretty much self-explanatory of how well he has done. Even at 20 is wily enough to bamboozle some of the senior batsmen in the world. Remember, he is also a more than handy batsman.

Jason Holder (Barbados Tridents): Currently the top-ranked all-rounder in Test cricket, Holder has also been a force in the 20-over format. Barbados have not won a title in five years; Holder will be keen on making amends to that.

Likely XIs

Guyana Amazon Warriors: Brandon King, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Shimron Hetmyer, Shoaib Malik (c), Nicholas Pooran (wk), Sherfane Rutherford, Keemo Paul, Chris Green, Shadab Khan, Romario Shepherd, Ben Laughlin.

Barbados Tridents: Leniko Boucher, Johnson Charles, Shai Hope (wk), Asif Ali, Jonathan Carter, Jason Holder (c), Ashley Nurse, Wahab Riaz, Hayden Walsh, Sandeep Lamichhane.

Prediction

Amazon to make it three in a row.
